In New England, winter doesn't ask permission. One week you're raking leaves, the next there's salt and slush tracked across the kitchen floor. The good news: a little preparation now, while it's still dry out, makes the whole season easier on your carpets and floors.
Start with a clean slate
A fall deep clean does more than freshen things up — it removes the summer and autumn soil that would otherwise get sealed under winter grime. It matters more than people realize: road salt and dirt cling to an already-soiled carpet far more than a clean one, so going into winter with fresh fibers means less buildup come March.
Mats at every door — inside and out
The simplest, highest-impact thing you can do. A coarse mat outside each entry knocks off the worst, and an absorbent mat just inside catches salt and melt-water before it reaches your carpet. Most winter floor damage happens in the first few feet past the door, so that's where to defend.
Set up a shoes-off, boot-tray zone
Give salty, wet boots somewhere to live. A boot tray and a bench in the mudroom or entry makes a shoes-off habit realistic for the whole household — and keeps crystalline salt (which is abrasive and holds moisture) out of the living areas entirely.
Add protectant for the winter ahead
Fabric and carpet protectant puts an invisible barrier on the fibers that helps them resist salt stains and spills and makes the inevitable winter messes far easier to blot up before they set. Applying it right after a cleaning, before winter hits, is ideal timing. (We're currently including free protectant on every item we clean for jobs booked to be completed by the end of 2026 — a good moment to add that winter barrier.)
Don't forget tile entryways
Salt and grit don't just hit carpet — they settle into grout lines in tile entryways and mudrooms, where mopping only pushes them around. A fall tile and grout cleaning gives those hard-working entry floors a clean start too.
Going into winter with clean, protected floors is the easiest way to come out the other side without a spring restoration project. See our carpet cleaning, serving NH, VT and MA.
